When Beyoncé posted her 2018-in-review video montage last month, eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice a flash of what appeared to be the singer in a wedding dress, some quickly speculating that she renewed her vows with her husband Jay-Z. (There were also some flashes of the same footage on the big screen during their On The Run II tour last year.) And now we have confirmation that this is true: the bridal couture label Galia Lahav recently shared an Instagram post confirming that Queen Bey chose their design for a renewal ceremony in June. Let’s take a closer look at the dress.
For the intimate ceremony, Beyoncé reportedly chose Galia Lahav’s “Thelma” wedding gown from its “Victoria Affinity” couture collection. The off-the-shoulder style—which features a corseted bodice, long fishtail train, Swarovski crystal embellishment, and Chantilly lace trimming—is said to pay homage to Queen Victoria’s wedding dress. Though, this being a global superstar, she had to give it a touch more glam: Beyoncé added a sweeping veil for added drama, and then slipped on some cool tiny sunglasses for an unexpected bridal touch. As for Jay-Z? He matched her perfectly in a white tuxedo and what appears to be white sneakers—very small shades, too.
So how does the renewal look compare to her original wedding dress? When they got married back in April 2008, Beyoncé actually wore a strapless tiered wedding gown designed by her mother, Tina Knowles. Though it makes for one sweet background story, that dress was much simpler and traditional in style—the renewal version, however, allowed the bride to really unleash the capital-F fabulousness she owns in her everyday life.
