Dublin music photographer who has worked with Beyonce, Madonna and Dua Lipa opens new city …

A celebrated music photographer from Dublin’s northside has just launched a new exhibition showcasing a decade of her work.

Ruth Medjber, aka Ruthless Imagery, worked with top artists including Beyonce, Jay-Z, Madonna, Grace Jones, Leonard Cohen and Dua Lipa.

She has also shot for magazines including Rolling Stone, NME and Hotpress.

Now the Drumcondra snapper is set to unveil 60 images from her portfolio at a free two-week event starting at November 23 at Fumbally Exchange in the city.

Ruth, who went on the road earlier this year as an official photographer for Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, is also a regular face on the live Irish music scene and has captured some of the country’s most famous homegrown heroes including Gavin James, Kodaline, All Tvvins and Lisa Hannigan.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Ruth said she is very excited about people getting to see some of her work from the past decade.

She said: “The exhibition will be my retrospective of 10 years shooting live music.

“I had millions of images to choose from, there’s a nice mix of both International and Irish acts.

“Without the Irish homegrown heroes I wouldn’t be where I am now so I wanted to make sure there were plenty of them in there too.”

The 32-year-old, from Drumcondra, said that taking photos has always been part of her life as camera equipment was always in her house as her father distributed it to shops across the country when she was growing up.

She said: “There was never really a time when I wasn’t taking photos.

“I was always surrounded by camera equipment because my dad used to sell it to all the photo shops across the country.

“He would have given me bits and pieces of equipment to play with. Photography was always part of my life.

“I was always passionate about music, festivals, gigs, capturing the atmosphere, it fascinated me.”

Ruth said that despite photographing some of the world’s most famous rockstars, the defining moment in her career to date was being told recently that the BBC had chosen her as their official photographer for next year’s Glastonbury Festival.

She said: “When I was called and asked to photograph Glastonbury for the BBC next year I thought to myself ‘You can’t get bigger than this’. You can’t get any better really.

“ When the news came in from them I was driving and pulled in at the side of the road and started screaming. I couldn’t believe it.

“I was 17 when I went to my first Glastonbury and if I had told myself back then that I would be shooting for the BBC at it I wouldn’t have believed it. It was always my goal.”

But Ruth still has her eyes on working with one particular band, she concluded: “One of my dreams would be to go on tour with Radiohead, that would be incredible.”

Ruth’s exhibition will run for two weeks from November 23 to December 2, in the Fumbally Exchange, Dame Lane, Dublin 2.
