Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran’s contrasting on-stage attire has the fans in a frenzy.
The debate erupted over the duo’s fashion choices following the performance of their duet Perfect at the Global Citizens Festival held in South Africa during the weekend.
Beyoncé donned a fuchsia ruffled Ashi Studio gown – one of five outfits she wore during her headline set – while Sheeran appeared much more understated in a black t-shirt and jeans.
Fans said the difference highlighted differences in gender expectations in pop music.

While most noted Sheeran should be able to wear whatever he feels most comfortable in, HuffPost UK entertainment reporter Daniel Welsh summed up a controversial contrast between the pair: “This photo is v v v v [very] representative of what we expect from men and women at the top of their game, isn’t it?”
Not everyone agreed, however. Popular music critic Anthony Fantano (aka The Needle Drop) tweeted, “Beyoncé can dress however she wants. She has the power of choice and she exercises it. Ed Sheeran can dress however he wants. He has the power of choice and he exercises it. Artists have agency, and will present themselves how they wish.”

The festival was held in celebration of what would have been the late Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday. It featured performances from Kacey Musgraves, JAY-Z, Usher, Pharrell Williams and Chris Martin.
