A viral photo of the global superstars at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 in Johannesburg, in which the British singer opted for a causal jeans and tee combo while Beyoncé wowed in a hot pink dress, sparked a heated debate.

However, Ed, 27, saw the funny side of the situation as he took to his Instagram Stories by sharing a story written about the furore and also offered a link for his followers to by his low-key black top.

He went on to offer a closer look at the shirt, which had HOAXUKSINCE94 written on it’, alongside the comments #dressedtoimpress and ‘swipe up to get the look.’

Clearly a fan of the brand, in another story he shared another message: ‘Follow ‘hoax1994 for more of my amazing fashion choices x.’

Pictures from the performance went viral because of the very different way the singers are dressed.

The star wore a lavish pink ruffled dress as she took to the stage at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 in Jo’burg, which marked what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday

While Beyonce was clearly stadium-ready, donning an extravagant pink ruffled costume that trailed behind her and showed off her famous pins, flame-haired Sheeran wore his trademark casual attire, blue jeans and a t-shirt.

On Twitter, one observer vented her anger that the Shape of You crooner wasn’t smarter.

@shonfaye wrote: ‘Ed Sheeran is a 27 year old man the fact we’ve enabled him to feel it’s ok to dress like this at all, let alone next to Beyoncé really boils my p***’

Some 65,000 people have since liked the tweet with thousands wading into the debate.

Many felt that the singers, who performed their duet ‘perfect’ together, offered a reflection on the different expectations put on men and women when it comes to clothes.

@sillyolddaniel added: ‘This photo is v v v v representative of what we expect from men and women at the top of their game, isn’t it?’

Plenty disagreed: @TheAntiStan wrote: ‘There is definitely a double standard regarding the acceptable public appearance of men and women. But this is more an example of celebrity brands. Beyonce has a brand.

‘Ed has a brand. They dress accordingly. They created these expectations for themselves.’

On Twitter: One outraged Beyonce fan said Sheeran should have smartened up for the appearance at the South African concert, which also featured Usher, Pharrell Williams, Oprah Winfrey and Naomi Campbell

Others said people should be judged on the ‘content of the character’ rather than what they wear on stage

@KellyW_93 reacted: ‘Is this a joke? This is what is wrong with the world. Worrying about someone not conforming to what society thinks they should look like, rather than focusing on their amazing talent. If that boils your p*** then I feel sorry for you.

@MattPowles added: ‘I think he can wear what he bloody well likes.’

@AndreaMSanchez added: ‘Beyonce is a 37 year old woman and the fact we’ve enable her to feel it’s ok to dress like this at all, let alone in public, really doesn’t bother me at all, because I prefer to judge people by the content of their character, rather than by what clothing they wear.’

@LosBlancos13_33 piped up: ‘Ed Sheeran is a simple man he sells out stadiums and arenas whilst playing on his guitar and singing his own songs so he doesn’t need to dress like a curtain.’

Tens of thousands flocked to the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday for a music festival also featuring Usher, Pharrell Williams, Trevor Noah, Oprah Winfrey, Naomi Campbell and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
